Nitto Ridge Grappler vs Toyo Open Country R/T Trail

The Ridge Grappler made hybrid tires a thing. The R/T Trail is Toyo's answer, and it brings one thing the Ridge never had: a treadwear warranty, up to 45,000 miles. Neither tire carries the three-peak snowflake. They weigh about the same, start with the same tread depth, and stand the same height. So this one comes down to warranty, price, and whether your size exists.

Quick verdict

If you want a mileage warranty or a hybrid that leans toward all-terrain manners, buy the R/T Trail. If you don't, buy the Ridge Grappler: it's about $30 a tire cheaper in 285/70R17, comes in far more sizes (including 24s), and its look is the one everybody is copying. If you deal with real winter, neither is snow-rated; a three-peak all-terrain is the better buy.
